Just think about it, whether it is at home, at work, or in a classroom, we are almost always inside some sort of interior environment. It is therefore imperative that we make wise decisions to impact the health of those interior spaces!
VOCs ?
"VOCs" or Volatile Organic Compounds are organic chemical gases emitted into the air from product or process.
Indoor VOCs level can be consistently higher (up to ten times higher!) than outdoors according to EPA.
Where do they come from ?
VOCs are mostly from man made chemicals, such as:
paints
varnishes
adhesives
air refresheners
cleaning products
furniture
floor and wall coverings
carpets
printers & copiers...etc.
What's the big deal ?
short term exposure health effect:
Eye and respiratory tract irritation, Fatique, Headaches, Dizziness and Nausea
long term exposure health effect:
Extensive irritation to eyes, nose and throat, Damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system, Cancer, Chronic fatigue, Loss of coordination

PAINT:
specify "ZERO" VOC paint. (why endure "some" harmful chemical substanaces, when you can enjoy "none"?
Products that are GREENGUARD Certified for low chemical emissions can contribute to the creation of healthier indoor environments
and are scientifically proven to meet some of the world’s most rigorous third-party chemical emissions Standards.

FLOORING:
When choosing flooring, whether it is carpet, resilient flooring, or underlayment, look for "FLOOR SCORE" certification.
This certification ensures the certified products meet stringent indoor air quality emissions requirements.

In design, acoustical comfort is often overlooked until after the effect. Did you know that the effects of exterior noise from transportation or industrial sources have been linked to sleep disturbance, hypertension and the reduction of mental arithmetic of school-aged children? In one study taken from a sample size of 4115 participants, it was found that the risk for myocardial infarction was elevated in men from road traffic noise at night and in women by air traffic noise at night.* So besides discomfort, noise may do more harm to our health than we realize.
Another research indicated that occupants are generally dissatisfied when conversations can readily transmit between rooms or across an open office, thus hindering confidentiality or creating distraction from tasks.* As for those of you whom work from home, you probably already know the importance of acoustical insulation!

So choose windows and door materials wisely...
For WINDOWS:
select well insulated glass, such as "Dual-pane glass" or "Triple-pane glass" when shopping for replacement windows. It will make a whole world of difference in the way you sleep and function, which translates to better mental and physical health. These types of window will insulate your space from unwanted exterior noise, while also help you save on heating and cooling cost.
For DOORS:
...and specify interior materials that soften sound
For FLOORS
For WALLS:
can use Fabric window treatment to soften spaces while provide privcy and add to acoustic insulation
apply fun Acoutic Wall Panels to decorate while enhance sound absorption in the room
We talked about what to avoid in Secret #1 to maintain the quality of your indoor air, but what about optimizing your IAQ (indoor air quality)?
The right indoor plants can do just that. Air-purifying plants bring vitality to your space, while also take care of your health by providing Oxygen and remove harmful VOCs from your indoor air! Size, quantity and type matter; check out a few of our favorites below, most are also listed under the NASA Clean Air Study:
IIn addition, indoor plants help to bring outdoors in; it reminds us our connections with nature and help us relax.
So invite a few of those plants into your house and let them do what they naturally do so well.
You would be glad you did!
