This is the same method our Green Origins principal uses for her own organic garden.  Simple and easy.  Just need to make sure you cover at least a 1.5- 2 inch-thick layer of soil on top and add bricks/rock on top of this last soil layer to deter unwanted critters.  Average 3 ~4 weeks usually yield one pot of healthy compost ready for use.

Simply start another composting pot while you wait for the previous to "mature".  You would be amazed by how much food waste can be diverted from landfill and you would never have to spend money on chemical fertilizer again.  p.s., adding a bit of wood chips would also work wonder.  There's no need to plug up bottom hole at your flower pot; it actually allows earh worms to come in to help out with the composing process!
